In retrospect…

I’ve got to say, I was not sure what I would miss too much from Bolivia when I left…but there are some things we do miss:)

Teaching English

Buying fresh chickens…ok maybe not so much ;-)

Thanks Aunt Shirley for all the wonderful cultural shots in Bolivia! :)

freshly squeezed sugar cane juice, boiled, and poured on fried doughnuts :9 yum!

Having fun with the Mattix kiddos

Kindergarten class friends

A friend who really wanted his picture taken with Kaleb because he was going to “really miss him”

Drinking Poro (a sugary herbal tea that one drinks with a metal straw with a strainer on the end)  It takes ones headaches away VERY quickly…and has more caffeine than coffee I am thinking!:)  Maybe not the best thing for an already hyper little Essie lou!

Daddy’s hands are missed as well:)

And the rest of him too:)  Thanks again Aunt Shirley for your nice photography skills…and mom and Aunt Shirley for watching the kids while we went on a fun swim!

 friends

Singing with Daddy

Although I grew up disliking much beef …I have gotten to LOVE the Churascos (lemon and salt BBQed beef with rice and yucca) there!

This of course is at a nice restuarant in Santa Cruz that we went to with mom and Aunt Shirley before we left…great food!  If you come visit we will treat you to it! :-)

Fresh milk is nice

Just a bit time consuming to boil first and then try and cool quickly to not allow bacteria to grow… but still very yummy to drink as hot chocolate :)

There are some things I don’t miss…

Hanging Laundry, and if you look closely, a cow and a baby too…no not Essie…although sometimes I’m tempted ;-) !

The meat market I could do without… once I went by myself with all three kids (yes I said ONCE:) to buy groceries and had my hands full of bags, and little hands when a group of fighting dogs came rushing through our legs fighting over a piece of meat…fortunately the worst part of the fight happened a few feet from us and NOT under our legs! :)

The other things I don’t miss is dirty water, all the “dirties” everywhere :) , and shopping in about 10 different little “hole in the wall” stores to find all you need for the week’s groceries…but hey, it all builds character ;-) !

And then there are the things that kids do wherever they are…collect nuts :)   Here is Selah in Bolivia collecting “cocos” as she calls them.

And then another world away in Oregon collecting WAlnuts(?) in Papa and Mima’s yard.  They were pretty excited to find nuts here too I think :)

Then we have to have a picture of the birthday girl of the week!  Birthday number…well, you can count the candles ;-) !

Daddy happened to miss this birthday as well as her first, but he got to sing HAppy Birthday to her over the phone which she loved.  And Selah just let me know yesterday that she had 16 dreams of daddy the night before…and all of him hitting the pinata and eating cupcakes and opening presents at Essie’s birthday…so he WAS there in a way ;-) !

  1. GREAT pictures, Kari … gives an awesome perspective of your life in Bolivia!
And a true depiction of what “fresh meat” is … those chickens and the beef wagon! Yikers …. :)

I was thinking of Essie’s birthday last week – and she looks happy as a clam celebrating her “Second”!

  2. Hi Kare, great choice of pictures… I specially like the ones of you in them:) Love, Gabe

  3. Love all of your pictures!! They are so cute. My fave is the hanging baby on the closeline!! HA! I never saw any of Gabe’s birthday, though! Happy late b-day, old man!

  4. You are beating me to the use of the pictures :-) I still haven’t sorted through all of them. Half were blurry anyway, so that helps weed them out! Nice blog! Happy B-day to Essie! What a sweet thing Gabe said……….and Congrats……
